Social Media that I use
^ The first symbol is friend requests, the next one is messages - how many people have messaged you and the last one is if you are tagged in a post or someones commented, liked, reacted to your post and it can be many other things - like if someone is going to an event near you.
A.) Purpose
The purpose of Facebook is to talk to relatives and friends online and to call them and you can do a normal call or a video chat if you want to see them, so it's like seeing them in real life. Another purpose for Facebook is to share news, whether its fake or real, you can share it. Another purpose is to post things you are doing, so if you made a piece of art you can post it with some text and people can like it or react to it, so its to share your life with whoever you're friends with for them all to see and you can share things that make you laugh with others on there. Another purpose could be to make new friends, since they have friend suggestions on there, so you can meet new people - friends of friends. Another purpose is to get personal information from you, from pages you've liked or games you've played, since they suggest games from what you've played or pages and then they use that information to advertise adverts to you, so then they can make money from the adverts because they know what you like and what you will click on and then they can give your personal information to others, for more advertising, since they ask for your email, profile picture and information that you have on their, like a bio, relationship status, interests, anything that your friends can see thats not private.
It is also used for companies and businesses to promote their business and get people to like their page, then they can advertise it and if its a clothes company and the person buys from it, they could suggest a clothes company thats like that.
B.) Content
The content that is shown in Facebook ranges from a variety, so more people will use Facebook, because they have a wide range of things people like. One of the kinds of content they have is memes, these are there so people are more likely to use it, since memes are popular and if people see memes they like a lot and many of them, they are going to use Facebook more. Another kind of content they have is photos, this is so people can share what they are doing, or share a meme or any photo they want for people to see, then they can get likes or reactions and comments from it or a share if someone likes it a lot and you can save photos to your phone or memes, so you can look back at it. They also have videos, so you can post anything you want and have the freedom to do anything and you can send videos to people and if theres an animal page, more people might like it and make it popular. They also have going live, this is to show people what you are doing at that exact moment in time and it could be something funny and you have the option to do that if you wanted to. Another kind is text, since you have the freedom to write anything, which would get people using it more.
C.) Target user/ membership
Facebook is aimed at 15-40 year olds, males and females, since the content is for everyone since they have so much on there and when you sign up to Facebook you have to be a certain age and the content like the news part could be for teenagers, but its most likely aimed at adults, for them to read, same with the articles for different things and the teenagers would like animal videos.
D.) Sources of revenue
85% of the source of revenue for Facebook is through advertisements and one of the other ways is through in-app purchases. They might also get it from . selling data for advertisers, since at one point they were going to sell peoples personal information.
E.) Legal and ethical issues
One of the legal issues is the lack of control of privacy, you can have a lot of privacy up to a certain extent but the privacy can be bad and if you don't know what you can keep private it won't be and that would be bad as well. Another ethical issue is that you can have pages and the content on them can be anything so there could be a page with something that isn't very ethical and Facebook wouldn't do anything about it since they have a lot of freedom to do what they want and anyone could say anything which could be offensive or illegal or un-ethical. Another legal issue is that someone could record something or stream something - like a movie thats at the cinema.
Instagram
The purpose of Instagram is to communicate with friends and family and to follow Youtubers or other things you like and then you can see what they are up to or posting, since some people post memes and someone might like certain memes so they would follow them. It is made by Facebook, so there would be similarities like how they use adverts to advertise to you and get you to follow people and you can like people things and you have a messaging part, so you can talk to friends.
The content in Instagram is photos, which include, what people post - it can be to do with a trip they went, of pets and anything, it can also be a meme. Another is videos, but they can't be on for too long and they replay after it's done. You can go live, to share what you are doing at that exact point. They have posts, when you can have text and profiles but it doesn't tell you much about them like Facebook would.
Instagrams target user is teenagers, since teenagers tend to be the people who become obsessed with getting the most followers and becoming popular or big and therefore would post stuff to get more followers, so I'd say the age range is 15-18 and they have things that teenagers would be interested in, like memes, and their favourite Youtubers and you can get some news things on there but not many. Its for males and females, since they want everyone to use it.
Instagram gets money from making a commission selling other's brand's products, so they promote brands to make money.
One of the legal issues is you could steal someones identity, because you could go on their profile and get a picture and you can have any name you want, so people don't know your real name and you don't have to know their personal information to do it because Instagram doesn't require a lot of information for you to make an Instagram account, so you can lie to people. One of the ethical issues is someone could say something about you and post pictures of you being mean, however you can report it, you can report anything and Instagram will look into it and take it down. There is also a lack of privacy on there and Instagram can try and get you to follow things you've liked on Facebook even though you say not to linking them or having them like each other but somehow they know what you've liked on Facebook and try to get you to follow them.
Twitter
A.) Purpose
The purpose of Twitter is to talk to people, post things that are on your mind or just what you want to post, you can post memes, pictures, videos and to advertise to people. You can also find new people to follow, since they have suggestions - from the people you follow.
The content in Twitter is photos, you can post memes or a photo and make your own meme, you can post videos you like, you can also look at their profile.
I think that Twitter is aimed at 20-40 year olds, males and females. This is because you can get news on there and follow a lot of celebrities and they can post their thoughts and opinions and say anything they want and there seem to be a lot more posts of text than photos and texts, however it depends on who you follow.
Twitter earns about 86% of its revenue from advertising this is by selling promoted products including promoted tweets, promoted accounts and promoted trends.
One of the ethical issues with Twitter is you can tweet about anything so you could discriminate about a certain person or religion, sexuality and other things, since you have the freedom to say anything. One of the legal issues is the lack of privacy.
